The book brings together the best scholarship on the subject, creating a new canon for teaching purposes by introducing a thematic approach; covers three major periods, from 1750 to 1830, from 1830 to 1910, and from 1910 to 2000, with substantial introductions by the editors; and, pairs primary documents with well-known historiographical essays - along with some key but under-represented works.
